Chai Latte – Spiced Milk Tea

What is a chai latte? It’s a delicious blend of black tea infused with cinnamon, cloves and other warming spices, combined with steamed milk and topped with foam for a perfect balance of sweet and spicy. This version is the indulgent Starbucks-style chai latte — extra sweet, creamy and absolutely delicious!

Starbucks-Style Chai Latte (serves 1 mug)

  • 1 tbsp loose black tea
  • 1 tbsp caster sugar
  • 200 ml (20 cl) water
  • 100 ml (10 cl) semi-skimmed milk or oat milk (oat milk is wonderfully creamy!)
  • 1 black peppercorn
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • 4 cardamom pods
  • 1 clove
  • 1 star anise
  • 4 tbsp gingerbread or vanilla syrup (e.g. Monin brand)
  • For the cinnamon whipped cream: whipped cream + a dusting of ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, bring the water and milk to the boil with the peppercorn, cinnamon stick, ginger, cardamom pods, star anise and clove. Simmer for a few minutes.
  2. Reduce the heat, add the loose tea and leave to steep for 1–2 minutes.
  3. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into your mug.
  4. Stir in the gingerbread syrup — adjust to your preferred sweetness level.
  5. Top with a swirl of whipped cream and a dusting of ground cinnamon.

Tip: For an iced version, make the chai as above, cool it completely, then pour over a glass filled with ice and top with cold foam.
